Why are You Training as a Traditional Midwife?
In my work as a birth doula I have come to realize that while I love supporting parents through every kind of birth, my heart is definitely drawn to homebirth. I value the wisdom and faith that is shared between traditional midwives (those uncertified with a third party or state) and their clients. I believe following the traditional model of midwifery training rather than jumping through hoops for a certification board is a better fit for me and more wholly encompasses my goals values.
What's the Difference Between Doulas and Midwives?
While both midwives and doulas are vital participants of your birth team, their roles differ greatly. Midwives provide clinical care, monitoring the health of mother and baby throughout pregnancy and delivery. Birth doulas do not perform clinical tasks, but lend parents informational, emotional, and physical support.
Does a Doula Replace Dad/My Partner?
A doula is never there to replace the birth partner! I believe it is crucial for women to be surrounded by love and support, especially in such a vulnerable season as pregnancy and postpartum. It is never my goal to interfere with a positive support system; I often sit back and observe then give suggestions to partners/family/friends on how they may better support a woman as she navigates labor. I always say: I know birth but the partner knows mom!
What if I Have a Cesarean?
Contrary to popular opinion, a doula is still valuable for cesarean births! whether or not a cesarean birth was intended a doula can provide prenatal support, remind you of your options during a surgical birth, assist with baby's first feeds, and sometimes accompany you and your birth partner in the operating room to provide various supports there as well. If a doula in the OR is something you would like, I can help you formulate a plan for talking to your provider to make it more of a possibility.
